What APVMA certification really means for infection control in animal care settings

Here at Safe4, we often highlight that our Veterinary Disinfectant is certified by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA), but what does this actually mean?
If you work in a vet clinic, kennel, cattery, zoo or rehoming centre, you rely on your disinfectant every single day. You spray it on tables, floors, cages and equipment. You trust it to stop the spread of viruses and bacteria. You also trust that it will not harm the animals in your care.
APVMA certification gives you that confidence.
What is the APVMA?
The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority regulates veterinary chemical products in Australia. Before a disinfectant can be legally supplied with certain claims, it must be assessed and registered. This is not a simple application process.
The APVMA reviews detailed scientific data to confirm that a product is both effective and safe when used as directed. In animal care environments, that matters, as when it comes to infection control, the last thing you need is a product that overpromises and underdelivers.
What does certification actually involve?
When a disinfectant goes through APVMA assessment, several areas are examined closely.
- Efficacy: The product must prove it can kill or inactivate specific pathogens. That includes bacteria and viruses that commonly threaten animal health.
- Safety: Toxicology data is reviewed to assess risks to animals, humans and the environment. This includes looking at skin contact, inhalation and potential residue exposure.
- Label claims: If a product states it is non-toxic or suitable for use in animal care environments, those claims must be backed by evidence. The APVMA does not allow unsupported statements.
There are also strict requirements around packaging, directions for use and clear instructions on dilution rates and contact times. Even after approval, products remain subject to ongoing oversight.
Why this matters
Choosing a disinfectant that has APVMA certification removes uncertainty.
- You know the efficacy claims have been independently assessed
- You know the safety profile has been reviewed
- You know the label instructions meet Australian regulatory standards
- You reduce the risk of using a product that could harm animals or staff
It also shows your clients that you take infection control seriously.
Safe4 Veterinary Disinfectant has been assessed and certified by the APVMA. That means when we say it is suitable for use in animal care settings, those claims are supported by data and regulatory review.
